VOICES FOR WATER

“I make my living taking people out on a boat, but there’s no guarantee that’s always going to be possible if you don’t take care of your waterways,” says Captain Noah Stewart. Through her tears, Kathi Irvin tells us, “This isn’t what I signed up for.” Floridians from all over the state are raising their voices for water. On November 6th, it’s time to raise yours. Vote for water!

SAVE OUR STATE

“I’ve never seen a situation like this … ever,” says environmental attorney, Erin Brockovich. People are sick, and sea turtles, manatees, dolphins, fish are all casualties of red tide and toxic blue-green algae in recent months. We are killing our oceans, and it’s time to push back against our negligent officials. Vote for clean-water candidates on November 6th!

FLORIDA’S TEST

Floridians agree, water is our most precious resource — but with toxic red tide and blue-green algae crises, we are poisoning ourselves, our marine wildlife and our future water supply. Our state government is ignoring our health in order to help Big Ag, so we have to do our own testing! Let’s make sure we elect officials who care about clean water on November 6th!

TOURIST TRAP

We still think Florida is a top tourist destination, but it won’t be for long. Not if you can’t swim in the water, you can’t eat any fish you catch, it’s not safe to paddle board or even walk along the side of the water. Florida’s latest pollution explosion is all due to agricultural runoff, untreated sewage, and chemical pollution that used to be better controlled, until the current Governor and his Agriculture Commissioner took the lid off. The future of Florida’s water is in your hands. Don’t forget, the Florida primary is August 28th.

WATER HOGS

Many Floridians just want to know: why is the water here so messed up? How could unsafe water infiltrate so much of the state, and who’s to blame? Turns out it has a lot to do with campaign contributions, lax government oversight, and farms and businesses demanding special favors.

Florida's Water Crisis

These documentary videos, provided In English and Spanish, offer a multi-year overview of the Toxic Algae Crisis in Florida, plus a 2020 update that covers the steps forward and steps back that have occurred in the last year. The videos are voiced by Floridians who have been most involved in the movement to clean our waters.

PROTEST & PROTECT

Young Floridians are finding out that the water holes and water sports they love the most are suddenly turning toxic. We interviewed young activists, college students and local residents, who grew up in the water, swimming, fishing, surfing, hanging out by the water’s edge. They asked: why doesn’t the local government do more to protect our water? If you think your leaders are not doing enough to keep Florida’s water safe, then help make a change. Don’t forget, the Florida primary is August 28th.

WILDLIFE AT RISK

Instead of frolicking Florida animals on land and sea, we now see fish kills, sick dolphins in the lagoons, dead oysters near our coasts, manatees desperate for food or a breath. Nature matters to nearly all Floridians, don’t take this lying down.

A SCARY MOLECULE

When the toxic algae blooms started getting worse in Florida, medical researchers tried to find out more about human health impacts. Now, years later, they discovered a related cancer cluster and even links to ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases. When they say stay away from the water, better comply.

EMERGING POLLUTANTS

Anti-depressants, birth control, anti-biotics – scientists have found these and other chemicals in our water supply along with coliform bacteria and other indicators that it’s coming from human waste. Find out what biosolids are, why farmers put them on their land, and how they end up in our water.

TROUBLED SPRINGS

Florida’s beautiful springs are world-famous, yet clear water is not clean water. In recent years a high percentage have been contaminated, and that’s bad for the aquifer – the source of 90% of our drinking water. Scientists and cave divers work together to explore the problem, and the solutions.

DON'T DRINK THE WATER

If the spike in Emergency Room visits coinciding with toxic algae blooms wasn’t convincing, the report of the liver cancer cluster in four counties just south of the I-4 corridor woke us up. Prominent doctors in our state are concerned that the state is not doing enough to protect our health. Ask your doctor!

DREAM HOME NIGHTMARE

Instead of living the dream, many newcomers to Florida are living a nightmare of dirty water and terrible health impacts. “We came here hoping to build our dream home, and we’ve had two fish kills in two years—  you’re gagging and you’re coughing, it’s not right.”

CLEAN WATER CONVOY

Florida residents converged on Lake Okeechobee from all over the state to make their voices heard, that their water is disgusting and poisonous, and they’ve had enough. They want local officials to fix this problem — not five or ten years from now, but immediately.
